"What's Up Doc?"

Bugs: “Well it is Easter again, and time to hide the eggs. I had better climb from my hole and head to Hershey, PA.

Hey Doc, who should I thank for associating me with Christ? Titian perhaps? And why doesn’t Easter fall on the same date every year, like Christmas?”

The custom of associating a rabbit or bunny with Easter arose in Protestant areas in Europe in the 17th century but did not become common until the 19th century. The Easter Bunny is said to lay the eggs as well as decorate and hide them. In the United States the Easter rabbit also leaves children baskets with toys and candies on Easter morning.

In 325CE the Council of Nicaea established that Easter would be held on the first Sunday after the first full moon occurring on or after the vernal equinox. From that point forward, the Easter date depended on the ecclesiastical approximation of March 21 for the Spring equinox.

Titian, Mary and Infant Jesus With a Rabbit, circa 1530

“Hey Doc, who’s that man lurking on the far right behind Mary?” Is that an egg in the basket or a pear?

Hey Doc, did you know that the egg is celebrated on Easter as a symbol of new birth and resurrection? And that the coloring of eggs, particularly of red, represents the blood of Christ spilled on Good Friday?

Hey Doc, Why isn’t it called Bad Friday? Did you know that the hunting of Easter eggs represents the hunting for the tomb of Christ?

“Where’s the Wabbit? Where’s the Wabbit?

"Hey Doc, can't you put that gun away for just one day? It is Easter you know! Well OK, I love you anyway.
