The 1963 World Series, A Transistor Radio, and Me

10/26/24

Tonight millions of Americans will watch the 1st game of the 2024 World Series between the New York Yankees and the Los Angeles Dodgers on a wide-screen TV at home from the comfort of their favorite chair.

MEMORIES!

But today, I harken back to the 1963 World Series between the same two teams, when an eleven year old baseball fan (me, rooting for the Dodgers) could hardly wait for his 6th grade class to conclude so that he could turn on his new Sears Silver Tone transistor radio to listen to Vin Scully call the game for the Dodgers.

Baseball fans may recollect that the series was a pitching duel that starred the Dodgers’ Sandy Koufax and Don Drysdale against the Yankees’ Whitey Ford, Mickey Mantle, and Roger Maris.  The Dodgers swept the Yankees in four straight wins (5-2; 4-1; 1-0; and 2-1)  The 4th game took place in Dodger Stadium on October 6, 1963, my eleventh birthday!

Whitey Ford

Luckily for us,  instead of relying on my blurred memory, we can watch a short film of the 1963 Series to get an idea of that era.  Enjoy!

We may not have a Sandy Koufax or Whitey Ford on the mound this week, but there should be plenty of excitement watching the Yankee batters: Juan Soto, Aaron Judge, and Giancarlo Stanton match up against the Dodgers: Shohei Ohtani, Mookie Betts, and Freddie Freeman.

Go Dodgers!
