Thanksgiving 2020: A Place for Gratitude

Over the river, and through the wood,

To Merry Mount away!

We would not stop for doll or top,

for 'tis Thanksgiving Day.

Over the river, and through the wood—

and straight through the barnyard gate,

We seem to go extremely slow,

it is so hard to wait!

Over the river, and through the wood—

To Paddy’s house to play,

He will say, "Let’s shoot today!”

As out to the field we go.

Over the river, and through the wood—

To Granmama's house we fly!

Hurrah for the fun! Is the turkey done?

Hurrah for the pecan pie!

Over the river, and through the wood,

To Merry Mount we’ll stay!

We’ll bless the food in a Merry mood,

for 'tis Thanksgiving Day.

Thanksgiving Day, Hurrah!

Another Thanksgiving has arrived and Rett and I are again elated to host the immediate family on my favorite holiday. 2020 has been a challenging year for everyone around the globe, but gratitude abounds at Merry Mount. Highlights from the past year: Retirement, the birth of Asa Ruth, Sunday Suppers and "42" at White Oak, and our newest resident, Nellie Rose.

Following tradition, at the center of the Thanksgiving festivities is Rett’s meal that includes turkey, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, Brussels sprouts, cranberry sauce, deviled eggs, and an assortment of pies. But the must have is Rett’s cornbread dressing.

Another tradition is the Woliver “turkey shoot” contest. Anyone who wants to participate may shoot a shotgun at a target to see who can get the most shotgun pellets within the boundaries of the target. Safety is paramount, and gun control is practiced.

There is much to be thankful for at Merry Mount and we wish all who read this blog today a very Happy Thanksgiving!

In Memoriam: Kim Adrian Woliver (July 2,1956-November 26, 2011); Trish Dugan Woliver; Alex Woliver.
