Prosperity and the Perfect Peach

Joy and Eva: “Paddy, what is your favorite food?” Long pause: “A ripe peach!”

Last Friday night, someone won over a billion dollars in the Mega Millions lottery. Not I, but I’m glad. For this week, I have tasted prosperity. Rett and I are comparatively in good health, are happily retired, and we live on just enough property to have a vegetable garden, several flower gardens, and an orchard; and all are located forty minutes away from our two children, their spouses, and three granddaughters. We are prosperous!

All the seasons run their race

In this quite resting-place;

Peach, and apricot, and fig

Here will ripen, and grow big;

Here is store and overplus

More had not Alcinous!

-Henry Austin Dobson

This year, our two peach trees produced one peach. It was hanging shoulder level from the ground, easily accessible, and I watched and nurtured it from early Spring. On Friday, I picked it, washed it, sliced it, and shared it with Rett, Joy, and Eva. Yum, delicious.

“An apple is an excellent thing—until you have tried a peach.”

-George du Maurier

Would I have been satisfied with that one bite of perfection? Hum, maybe, but I am prosperous enough to have purchased last Saturday two boxes of peaches from The Peach Truck Company.

So this week, I have almost had my fill of perfectly ripe peaches and Rett has been busy processing peaches: jarred preserves, and sliced peaches for the freezer for future peach cobblers. Prosperity.

Peaches

Juicy, squeezable and round I have your juice on my lips fleshy, touchable and magnificent I skim you with my finger tips

opening you up so gently touching your inner stone Kissing you, caressing you and your warm and peachy tone

my tongue brushing upon you like an explorer getting a buzz from hoping to find some new adventure and taking it from your fruitful fuzz.

juicy, squeezable and round your juice lingers on my lips I touch them with my fingers then I rest my fingers on my hips.

-Laura Salmon

Joy and Eva: "How are you today, Paddy?" Quick response: "Peachy".

Thank you for this good reminder of how prosperous we are indeed -- family, food, time, health, comfortable living conditions -- that is indeed prosperity and we are very fortunate to have enough and more to share.
