A Tribute to Artist Tim Dyer

As one drives westward down Junk Road, one expects to see expansive fields of soybeans and corn, an ever changing magnificent sky, and a landscape dotted by barns and silos, but one doesn’t necessarily expect a leaning, rectangular cube of chiseled stone seemingly floating in air; and yet at 6200 Junk Road, perfectly positioned between two trees, is such a sculpture, the work of local artist and structural engineer, Tim Dyer.

A Structural Engineer is a person who analyzes, designs, plans, and researches structural components and structural systems to achieve design goals and ensure the safety and comfort of users and/or occupants.

An Artist is a person who possesses a conscious skill and creative imagination.

Tim Dyer is an Artist/Structural Engineer!

On Thursday, September 22, 2022, Rett and I were invited to the installation of a sculpture commissioned by Robert Bode and Lee Thompson who reside at 6200 Junk Road. I was amazed as I witnessed Tim place an approximately 590 pound diagonally vertical stone cube onto another bell-shaped horizontal slab of granite that when in place can be easily turned by hand both clockwise and counter clockwise.

It is appropriate to quote two world-renowned sculptors:

“Art cannot be stagnant. You might look at an abstraction, painting or sculpture or simple patterns of planes, spheres and nuclei and they simply may have no meaning. Motion is the next step in sculpture.”

Alexander Calder

“A piece of sculpture can have a hole through it and not be weakened if the hole is of a studied size, shape, and direction.”

-Henry Moore

Tim Dyer completely understands these quotes and the proof is in the spin of his marvelous stone sculptures.

Thanks Lee and Robert for bringing new Arts and Culture to Junk Road.
